Anthos, the AI Play companion for toddlers
by Marianna Manolioudaki, Arya Mishra
Children can't journal, so Anthos turns story time into a window into their developmental journey.
The idea
Anthos is an AI developmental companion that transforms story time into a child's version of journaling. Adults reflect by writing. Young children can't, they express themselves through stories, imagination, and play. Anthos uses a conversational Tavus PAL to guide children through personalized adventures that naturally encourage communication, emotional understanding, creativity, and problem-solving. While the child experiences magical story time, Anthos quietly builds a longitudinal understanding of their interests, learning style, and developmental journey, giving parents warm, non-diagnostic insights and conversation starters. What makes Anthos original is that it uses persistent, face-to-face conversation to turn everyday play into a personalized developmental experience that grows alongside each child. Every adventure is generated around evidence-informed developmental objectives, adapts to the child's interests and previous interactions, and becomes more personal over time through memory.
What it does
Anthos is a personalized AI developmental companion for children ages 5–7. Children can go on interactive story adventures, learn new concepts, practice school subjects, explore their interests, and solve playful challenges through natural conversation. Every story and question is intentionally designed around developmental psychology—for example, helping a lonely dinosaur identifies emotional understanding and empathy, recalling story details practices working memory, and deciding what a character should do next develops communication, creativity, and social reasoning. Anthos remembers previous conversations, personalizes future adventures, and continuously adapts to the child's interests and developmental goals. After each session, parents receive non-diagnostic, play-based insights into the developmental skills practiced, interests that emerged, memorable moments, conversation starters to continue learning offline, and recommendations for future adventures.

What's next
Long term, Anthos could become a lifelong developmental companion that grows alongside each child, continuously personalizing adventures and helping parents understand their child's growth over time. We also envision expanding Anthos for educators, speech-language pathologists, and pediatric psychologists to support learning and provide evidence-informed, non-diagnostic observations in educational and clinical settings.
